Houston Day

Ryan and I both love living in Houston. There is still a lot within our own city that we have yet to do. On Sunday evening, we decided to check out three things I have on my Houston List. All three of them were along Memorial Drive.

1) The Houston Police Memorial - It was a really nice memorial with a smaller version of it by the parking lot for those who can't climb. It was created to honor the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. When you get to the top of the pyramid, there is water in the middle surrounded by names of some of those who lost their lives. The view of downtown Houston from this memorial was beautiful.

2) Blue Trees on Memorial - These trees were painted blue to call attention to deforestation, climate changes, and the care we need to take after our trees. If you drive on Waugh over Memorial Dr they are hard to miss because they are so bright. Probably not a great spot to relax in because it is in a round about for Memorial Drive, but a good spot for some pictures.

3) Waugh Bat Colony - If you go on a Friday or Saturday, Ryan thinks there is someone there who gives a speech about the bats about 30 minutes before they emerge or before sunset. There wasn't any one there when we went, but this has been something we've wanted to do for a while. When you come up to the bridge, you can see some bats already flying around underneath it. As it gets darker, more and more bats begin to fly back and forth under the bridge. As it gets even darker, some bats start to fly out from the bridge and then back in. Eventually, they all start coming out and they kept coming out for what seemed like 30 minutes. We left while they were still coming out from under the bridge, so I don't really know how long they continue to fly out. We were able to walk up on the bridge and be right above them. It was a cool sight to see. If we do it again sometime, reminder to myself: bring bug spray and possible spray something nice right on my nose so I'd smell that instead of bat pee all night.

It was a fun Houston evening, all along one street of things we haven't done before. We even took Lily with us and she got to swim in the Gus Wortham Fountain before we went home. Ryan and I took some of our engagement photos at this fountain so it was fun to visit it again.

Still lots more of Houston to see.
